New information regarding the Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of conservative groups has emerged that could further damage the Obama administration’s creditability. While President Barack Obama said last week that he first heard about the scandal in the press, it has been revealed over the last 48 hours that the White House’s chief lawyer learned of the IRS misconduct weeks ago, and Chief of Staff Denis McDonough was aware of the Treasury Department’s inspector general review of the agency last month. Although senior officials who knew of the inspector general investigation swear the president was never told about the possible misconduct until it made headlines, the continued investigation into the IRS scandal appears to have the White House on its heels and public suspicion on the rise.
