Those looking to cut out a few calories might choose to eliminate alcohol from their diet. But a Texas man is saying he was able to lose 80 pounds — keep it off — and enjoy the effects of alcohol.

Broderic Allen ”smokes” alcohol instead of ingesting it, a practice which doctors say is very bad for one’s health, WFAA-TV reported. To do this, the alcohol is mixed with dry ice and the vapors are inhaled.

“Once you lose the weight, you want to keep it off,” he said. “So I figured I could have my cake and eat it, too.”

Allen said if you do it “too much at once, it’s kind of overwhelming.”

WFAA-TV reported Dr. Walter Gaman saying there’s a reason for that.

“It goes right through your lungs, hits your bloodstream, and goes right to your brain,” he said. This means the substance is not metabolized by one’s liver or slowed through digestion.

“Just imagine pouring alcohol in your lungs… it’s just horrible,” he told WFAA-TV.

Here’s the report about the practice:

“Smoking” alcohol is one of the many disturbing trends some have adopted to get drunk without having to actual imbibe beer, wine or liquor. Other techniques doctors have warned against include drinking hand sanitizer and “butt chugging,” which involves getting alcohol into one’s system through the rectum.

WFAA-TV reported Gaman saying the near instant effect of the alcohol is not the only danger of “smoking” booze. The dry ice itself, he said, could have a “toxic” effect on the lungs because of its temperature.

Allen said he believes not being excessive in this practice makes it alright, but Gaman disagreed, saying just one time is too much because the high potential for an overdose.
