Okay, let’s say you’re looking for information about West Orange, N.J.
You type “west orange info” in a Google search…and voila.
Top result? The official web site of West Orange, naturally.
Big-time, professional…what you’d expect.
Oh, now wait a sec…there’s an interloper about.
What’s this, taking 4th place in the Google search?
Of course, when you arrive on the West Orange Info home page, there’s absolutely no mistaking it for the township’s official site.
But apparently the stark disparity between what each digital destination offers visually and otherwise wasn’t good enough for West Orange Township attorney, Richard D. Trenk, who sent a cease-and-desist letter to Jake Freivald, the owner of the West Orange Info site.
Trenk’s claim? Seems westorange.info is an “effort by [Freivald] to confuse and conflate the Township’s official domain name and Web site with the Info Domain that [Freivald] maintain[s].”
But rather than wilting in the face of such official correspondence, Freivald got his own lawyer, Stephen B. Kaplitt, who proceeded to write back to Trenk. (Well, that’s putting it mildly. Kaplitt pretty much serves up an avalanche of sarcasm that will likely either make Trenk see red or shame him into silence.)
