When Clifford Luther sat down to make small talk with a customer who had walked in his Saskatchewan (Canada) diner, he had no idea it would turn into an awesome act of charity.
See, it just so happens that Luther struck up a conversation with a man named Bob Erb — a “pot activist” and the recent winner of Canada’s $25 million jackpot.
“A happy-go-lucky Canadian lotto winning pot activist dropped into a diner for a burger and fries — and ended up leaving a $10,000 tip,” the New York Daily News reports. “Bob Erb was on his way to bury his father’s ashes when he stopped off at the Old West Express in Saskatchewan last month.”
The conversation started when Luther noticed Erb was wearing a Legalize Marijuana pin.
“One thing came to another, and he’s from B.C. and I was telling him how my 25-year-old daughter is out there right now and has just been diagnosed with cancer,” Luther said.
Sadly, Erb’s own 26-year-old son died roughly four years ago. The conversation between him and Luther must have struck a chord.
“He was emotional about it, just as any parent would be in that kind of situation,” Erb said, adding that Luther “was just looking to talk and learn about things from another perspective.”
Erb returned to the diner five days later, ordered another meal, and cut Luther a massive check.
“He asked for a pen and said: ‘Here, you can just take the bill out of that,’” a shocked Luther told the Ottawa Citizen.
“He just kind of said ‘If you need to get out there quickly, this will help you.’”
Considering Erb scored big with the $25 million jackpot, it’s safe to say he’s good for the check.
“It just shows how good people can be, you know, how he had good fortune and he was able to pass it on and I believe he’s a very generous man,” Luther said.
“It’s really lifted my spirits. There are just some really caring people out there.”
