Millions of Egyptians poured into the streets on Wednesday to celebrate the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi and his Islamist regime. Following an Egyptian general’s announcement of a successful military coup, crowds erupted in jubilation at the news.
“Since last November, 2012, they started to call for a national dialogue with all political parties have responded, and it was rejected by the president in the last moments,” General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said in the televised announcement.
Sissi said a government of technocrats will be appointed to run the country during a transition period he did not specify.
Cheers erupted among millions of protesters nationwide who were demanding Morsi’s ouster. Fireworks lit the Cairo night sky. Morsi supporters elsewhere in the city shouted “No to military rule.”
