Bette Midler may have brought the country to tears last week when she sang a dying woman’s favorite song to her over the phone, but she’s likely to elicit the opposite reaction once her 4th of July tweet hits the masses. That’s because on Thursday the singer used the national holiday to tout…Britain.

“Happy Independence Day!” the message reads. “Just think, if we hadn’t won that war, today wouldn’t be a holiday AND we’d have health care.”

The idea that someone with such a national platform would use it to take a shot at America on the day we celebrate our independence from Britain will likely be unpalatable to many.
