Skittles. Iced tea. Internet meme.
That’s all it takes these days, apparently. After all the “planking,” “Tebowing” and any number of “-ing” crazes to sweep social media, a new one has taken hold — this one to imitate slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.
It’s called “Trayvoning,” where users pose as a dead body with Skittles and tea, the items Martin had when he was fatally shot by George Zimmerman.
As the website The Inquisitr put it: “Trayvoning Is Like Tebowing, But Horrible.”
The trend first surfaced last year, but has picked up again in the wake of Zimmerman’s murder trial, KTXL-TV reported. When it started, Mediaite called it “the coolest new trend for idiots.” Now, users on Twitter are calling it “so disrespectful,” “disgusting” and “vile.”
“Trayvoning” isn’t limited to the pages of the Internet: Orlando Sentinel reporter Jon Busdeker tweeted a photo Saturday morning of a demonstrator lying on the grass outside the Seminole County courthouse while awaiting the jury’s verdict.
Zimmerman, who says he shot Martin in self-defense, could be convicted of either second-degree murder or manslaughter and could face up to a lifetime prison sentence.
