Did Reporters Laugh at Jay Carney’s Immigration Reform Claim?

As White House Press Secretary Jay Carney recited talking points about the benefits of “comprehensive immigration reform” on Friday, a number of reporters broke out laughing in the middle of his comments.

“Comprehensive immigration reform…would significantly reduce our deficit, would expand economic growth, would raise wages,” Carney explained.

Immediately following his claim that immigration reform would somehow raise wages, several reporters can be heard laughing.

Because the camera is fixed on Carney, it is impossible to know for sure what prompted the laughter. It is entirely possible that someone cracked a joke or did something else to cause the chuckles. It should also be noted that reporters in the room had also laughed a few times prior to Carney’s comment about immigration reform raising U.S. wages.

A woman can be heard in the video saying, “I’m sorry” for the interrupting laughter.
