Concerned that new legislation in North Carolina may leave only a single abortion clinic in the state for women “seeking out choice,” MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts put the question to Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, with a bit of what some might call euphemistic wordplay.
“How do you respond to that with such a dramatic closure of access to choice providers for women?” Roberts asked.
Pat McCrory, North Carolina’s Republican governor, signed into law updated abortion regulations for clinics in the state Monday, including a requirement that doctors have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals, The New York Times reported.
Controversy and protest from abortion advocates has surrounded the new legislation’s safety standards; McCrory, however, said that a legislator addressed his concerns about the bill restricting a woman’s access to abortions.
But Roberts evidently doesn’t see it that way, opening his program by declaring that “North Carolina is now the latest Republican-led state to restrict a woman’s access to abortion.” Reports indicate that only one clinic in the state satisfies new safety standards.
And how did Hogue respond to Roberts’ question focused on North Carolina’s “choice providers”?
“Not only did [McCrory] break a sacrosanct campaign promise not to restrict choice but he is actually playing politics with women’s lives,” Hogue said.
