Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi pummeled Republican lawmakers on Tuesday, accusing them of taking “food from the mouths of children” in a “wrong-headed approach” to cut food assistance programs.
“Republicans reportedly want to slash $40 billion from SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] and other critical efforts,” Pelosi said in a statement. “This wrong-headed approach will take food from the mouths of children and undermine the well-being of millions of families.”
The Minority Leader’s blistering comments come on the heels of a letter sent earlier that day by more than 200 House Democrats to Republican Speaker John Boehner demanding the final farm bill include more funding for SNAP.
House Republicans removed funding for SNAP entirely from a recently passed farm bill, according to The Hill.
Pelosi said her party is “united in seeking a responsible solution to this challenge.”
“It is our hope that the Republican response to this letter is focused on how we move forward on behalf of the best interests of hardworking Americans,” she said. “We must act to fight not to increase hunger in America.”
