An Orlando abortion clinic, known for its controversial “abortion coupon,” which saves $50 on Sundays, is under fire again — this time for using the image of a celebrity without permission in an ad promoting an abortion discount.
The commercial shows a picture of actress Kate Hudson, who is the mother of two, among a reel of other smiling women with the text advertising $100 off the procedure with a link to the PDF where customers could print the discount.
But the Orlando Women’s Center never asked permission to use Hudson’s image in the video, which appeared on YouTube three days ago.
“I can confirm that this use is unauthorized and we had no knowledge of it,” Brad Cafarelli, Hudson’s representative, told WKMG-TV.
Watch WKMG’s report:
As of Monday, the video no longer seems to have Hudson’s picture. Dr. James Pendergraft, owner of the clinic and several others in the state, told WKMG he knew the commercial was in production but he didn’t see the final cut. He also noted that celebrities are not supposed to be included.
“There are those that say that the Women’s Center are offering women of low income a coupon to have their abortion procedure performed. There are others that say we are targeting the poor and the vulnerable by offering our $100.00 off abortion clinic coupon in the State of Florida. First and foremost, any out of State woman is able to use our coupon,” the description under the video promoting a $100-off coupon states. “The $100.00 off abortion clinic coupon is not just available to the poor or indigent. It is available to all women who wish to use our services for first trimester abortions performed either surgically or by the Abortion Pill process.”
Here’s what appears to be the original commercial minus Hudson’s picture:
