Miley Cyrus’ over-the-top, sexually charged performance on Sunday night’s MTV VMA’s is getting lots of attention on all sorts of media outlets. However, you know it’s reached critical mass when MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski focuses most of her talk time on it.
Tuesday morning’s episode of “Morning Joe” came out of the blocks talking about it. In fact, the introductions of the cast members and guest were barely finished when Brzezinski started her rant:
“I wouldn’t make a joke of it…that young lady, who is 20, is obviously deeply troubled, deeply disturbed, clearly has confidence issues, probably has an eating disorder. I don’t think anybody should have put her up on stage. That was disgusting and embarrassing.”
When Joe Scarborough tried to share his perspective – the perspective of a father of two boys – Ms. Brzezinski couldn’t contain herself. She interrupted her co-host after he started this statement, “I’m an old guy with two older boys… .” As Scarborough paused for a millisecond, Brzezinski finished the thought for him: “They don’t think that’s attractive. Nobody does, Miley.”
Again Scarborough tried to make his point, asking if he could finish what he was trying to say — but again Brzezinski could not contain herself:
“I’m sorry, but the point you’re going to make is exactly what I just said. That was not attractive. That was not fun. That was not funny. That was really really bad for anyone who is young and impressionable. And she’s really messed up, so I don’t think they should have put her on stage. They should be ashamed of themselves.”

The conversation continued and Scarborough eventually was allowed to weigh in on the performance. “Morning Joe” regular cast member Willie Geist also added a salient point about the fact that Cyrus was not the first former Disney Channel star to make news with a sexualized performance:
(Don’t let the screen grab fool you. This clip is different than the one above)
Ms. Brzezinski continued her comments about Cyrus’ performance throughout the show. It’s fairly safe to say that she was not pleased.
Still, it’s not like Cyrus’s performance was a complete shock: She actually warned / teased people what she had planned.
During the pre-show for the VMAs, she walked the red carpet and spoke with the host “Sway” and hinting that something very controversial might be in store during her performance. Referencing the 10-year-old kiss between Madonna and Britney Spears during 2003′s VMAs, Cyrus said:
“She (Madonna) passed the torch by passing the tongue (to Britney Spears). We’ve got better in store for you guys, it’s going be even crazier than the kiss. (Referring to the Madonna – Britney Spears kiss from 2010.) This is just the beginning of my movement. Today the pre-order came out and I’m already #1 with my single that no one had heard until today. It’s already #1, so I’m already so excited. It’s a part of a movement that I’m about to create, and my fans have been really important in it.”
