A Colorado teen was shot dead Friday after a scare prank on a friend went terribly wrong.

Premila Lal, 18, and her cousin hatched a plan to scare her 15-year-old brother and a 21-year-old friend by jumping out of a closet and making noise, according to police. However, when the older friend, Nerrek Galley, mistook the prank for a real-life home invasion, he reportedly opened fire and fatally shot Lal.

It wasn’t until after he shot her that Galley realized it was his friend, Lal. He reportedly rushed her to the Longmont United Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Longmont Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur told the Denver Post that the woman’s death was “unintended and extremely tragic.”

Police charged Galley with suspicion of providing a firearm to a juvenile, child abuse and reckless endangerment, Fox News reports. Satur said the shooting is not gang-related and no drugs or alcohol were involved.

“The 21-year-old let a juvenile male have possession of a handgun without the parent’s permission. That is a felony crime in our state,” Satur told KDVR.
