Hollywood depictions of exorcisms show that the practice of banishing demons is generally a loud and boisterous one. It seems, based on an incident in Limoux, France, that there may be some truth to fictional portrayals. Consider that the town’s residents recently heard horrific “blood-curdling” screams, prompting numerous calls to authorities.
When police arrived at the scene around 9:30 p.m. last Friday, they found themselves, to their surprise, in the midst of an exorcism.
A local evangelical church was in the middle of the ritual, as a local pastor was attempting to banish an alleged demon from one of the congregants. Realizing that no crime was in process, police apparently stood by as the practice unfolded.
Perhaps most interestingly, The Huffington Post reports that Pastor Régis Berdeilh was allegedly successful in removing the spirit.
The Local has more about the bizarre incident:
Police officers, arriving at the address in question, discovered it was the home of the Evangelical Assembly of the Deliverance.
What greeted them was not a grisly murder scene, or a horrific episode of domestic violence, but rather the church’s pastor, locked in fierce battle with a “demon” which had possessed a member of the congregation. [...]
The “victim,” originally from the island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean, thanked the pastor profusely, and local police were satisfied there was no more cause for concern at the church.
In the end, the incident apparently ended peacefully. Whether or not an actual demon was exercised, well, we’ll leave you to make your own conclusions.
