Are rude fans ruining professional golf tournaments by screaming as players swing?

The first two rounds of the $8 million BMW Championship golf tournament have already provided fans with some memorable moments:

  • Jim Furyk shot a 59 on Friday, becoming just the 6th golfer in PGA tournament history to shoot a score that low.
  • Friday also saw Tiger Woods get slapped with a two-stroke penalty after a video crew reported that his golf ball moved when Tiger touched some debris near it on the first hole. (PGA officials reviewed the video that showed the infraction and hit Woods with the penalty.)

But one of the strangest moments in the four-day tournament happened Saturday. As Sergio Garcia started his backswing for his second shot on the par-5, 18th hole, a fan screamed “Go Tiger!”

Distracting a golfer during a swing can be costly to the player. In a tournament like the BMW Championship, one errant shot can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost winnings. Sunday’s champion in this tournament will take home more than $1.4 million, but the prize money drops significantly with each spot beneath the #1 position.

Garcia was obviously bothered by the screaming fan, turning back toward the crowd with an angry stare.

The NBC announcers did not initially hear the “Go Tiger!” yell, but in a replay review, the taunt is heard as plain as day.

Garcia’s distracted shot did not make it all the way to the green. But his next shot was dead on, allowing the Spaniard to finish with a birdie on the hole. He currently sits at six under par, tied for 11th place.

Garcia and Woods were playing together on Saturday. There has been an undercurrent of tension between the two pros since May of this year when Garcia made an inappropriate remark that included Woods and fried chicken. Garcia has since apologized, and Woods appears to have accepted the apology.

But that has not stopped fans from taunting Sergio. As he was about to tee off for the third round of this summer’s U.S. Open, a spectator is heard yelling “fried chicken!”

Apparently some fans just won’t let the issue rest.

The NBC announcers support removing screaming fans from the golf courses. What do you think? Should unruly fans should be tossed off the course? Participate in our Blaze Poll on the subject.
