CNN’s Candy Crowley interviewed Congressman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) during her “State of the Union” show Sunday. The pair discussed the U.S.-Russian deal to secure Syrian chemical weapons to avert a U.S. strike against Bashar al-Assad’s regime, and Rogers was concerned over the broader implications of the agreement.
“So that indecisiveness, I think, gave the diplomatic advantage to the Russians,” Rogers says. “They saw it, they stepped in. This is a Russian plan for Russian interests. And we should be very, very concerned…”
To which Crowley replies, “Who cares? If it has a chance to get rid of chemical weapons, do we really care that Russia got the diplomatic edge?”
Rogers does his best to mitigate Crowley’s apparent lack of concern: “Well, if it were just that, that’s true. But if the president believes, like I do, that a credible military force helps you get a diplomatic solution, they gave that away in this deal. I’m really concerned about that.”
