When a Cardinals football player took off his glove yesterday, he received a gruesome surprise.

The bone of safety Rashad Johnson was exposed and part of his middle finger actually remained inside the glove.

Kent Somers, who covers the Cardinals and NFL for the Arizona Republic, has been tweeting updates as to what happened.

It is unclear what exactly broke Johnson’s finger on the Saints’ home territory Sunday, but Somers reported that the incident occurred during a punt return while he tackled Saints running back Darren Sproles.

Sports Illustrated reported that Somers, even after discovering the tip of his finger still in the glove, was wrapped up and back out on the field.

Johnson went into surgery yesterday with doctors concerned about the possibility of infection. Somers reported that doctors “shaved (the) bone” as part of the repair. As a whole, Johnson seems to have lost only the tip of the finger.

New Orleans, continuing to go undefeated this season, beat the Arizona team 31-7.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians referenced the injury as one of many that might have contributed to the loss, according to the Associated Press.

“We had critical injuries, and some young guys had to chip in and play,” Arians said.

The AP noted linebackers Lorenzo Alexander and Sam Acho having to leave the game because of injuries to a right foot and left ankle, respectively.

“They didn’t handle it as well as I hoped they would,” Arains said of the less experienced players.

It is unclear at this point if Johnson will play with the Cardinals against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this coming Sunday.
