Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel received a less-than-warm welcome at a recent basketball tournament in the city’s South Side.

The Democratic mayor and former chief of staff to President Barack Obama was introduced to a mix of cheers — and boos — during the event, which was meant to “make peace on the streets,” Chicagoist reported. Chicago has been suffering from a plague of gun violence.

From Chicagoist:

[T]he booing is significant in many respects. First, there’s the location: Saint Sabina is a Catholic African-American community, whose Father Michael Pfleger has made a considerable amount of news over the years.

Next, there’s the tenor of Mayor Emanuel’s actions toward the African-American community itself, which can be best described as an amazingly wrongheaded exercise in biting the political hand that feeds you.
