It is often said by those on the right that there is a firmly-established leftist bias in the “mainstream media.”
On his radio program Friday, Glenn Beck satirized what he believes the media would like to have said about yesterday’s dramatic car chase in Washington, D.C. Following that, he imagined what they would be saying if we weren’t in the middle of a “government shutdown.”
Pretending to be a “mainstream” news anchor, Beck remarked: “We have to go to the breaking news…of the unarmed mother, the unarmed mother who was shot and killed by the brave men and women of the Capitol Police that are not being paid because of the racist hatemongers, Republicans [and] Ted Cruz.”
“We’d like to tell you that this was some right-wing extremist, but no, instead it was a woman who was suffering from a medical condition. We’d like to be able to tell you that it was a medical condition that she couldn’t get healthcare for, but she had ‑‑ she had all that going for her,” Beck continued. “She was a black woman, and the police just gunned her down in the streets. Of course, we shouldn’t probably harp on that because…well…it doesn’t fit into the story lines that we like to tell.”
“If she were white, we’d be pounding, just pounding another white right-wing extremist, somebody probably who hated the president,” Beck added. “But this one loved the president. In fact, loved the president so much, she thought the president was stalking her…”
Beck’s co-host Pat Gray stepped in to note that Beck’s mockery comes from an early news report lamenting that the Capitol Police “who stopped this threat” are “not being paid” and “not going to see their money until this government shutdown ends.”
Responding just to that point, Beck said that in all likelihood the payrolls will be minimally affected since most people aren’t paid daily, but every two weeks.
Following the segment on what the media would have like to have said, Beck proceeded to imagine what members of the media would be saying if we weren’t in the middle of a partial government shutdown.
Reverting to his fake newscaster voice, Beck remarked: “We have an unarmed African‑American mother who is just suffering from depression…because she couldn’t get healthcare. And she got into her car distraught, just trying to struggle as any woman does….Okay, she hit a couple of people, but she was unarmed. Why are the racist police gunning this unarmed African‑American woman down?”
Beck’s co-host Stu Burguiere mockingly blamed “these racist officers” and their evil “Second Amendment weapons.”
“Do you have any evidence at all that they were racist?” Beck asked.
“I give you Trayvon Martin,” Gray said, stepping in. “It’s been less than a year and a half since the Trayvon killing, and this is reminiscent of that.”
Burguiere added in a breaking news tone: “We have confirmation now that the suffering woman who was shot by the non-suffering officers ‑‑ one of them ‑‑ or at least someone who worked with the one who shot the suffering mother/woman…was the same color as Adolf Hitler. That’s confirmed.”
“Are you saying [Hitler's] a relative?” Beck asked.
“That can’t be ruled out at this time,” Burguiere responded.
“Thank you very much,” Beck said. “Again, we have a suffering mother/woman, unarmed, gunned down African‑American, by Adolf Hitler.”
The three also seriously discussed the case — not just the media’s portrayal of it — later in the show. You can watch that conversation below:
