It took only about a minute on Monday night for an interview between CNN host Piers Morgan and Second Amendment Foundation founder Alan Gottlieb to devolve into anger, frustration and name-calling. The two clashed over firearm access and “Guns Save Lives Day,” a pro-gun event intentionally scheduled around the first anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
The host called the event’s timing “one of the most disgusting things I have ever had to witness.”
Morgan began by asking why the Second Amendment Foundation chose the actual anniversary, Dec. 14, as the initial date to hold the event (it has now been moved to Dec. 15).
“We picked that day because the gun prohibition lobby was planning on celebrating and launching their new attacks on 80 million law-abiding firearms owners,” Gottlieb explained.
From there, Morgan, in an attempt to decry the fact that the pro-gun initiative was planned on the shooting’s anniversary, began reading disgusted reaction from one of the Sandy Hook victim’s family members.
Gottlieb said he found the family member’s quotes against the event over-the-top. When he snickered and tried to explain that he has no ill will in planning “Guns Save Lives Day,” Morgan lost it.
“You plan a campaign to promote the good side of guns on the first anniversary of the worst mass shooting at a school in American history and you have the gall to laugh when I read out a quote from one of the victim’s families?” the frustrated host said. “How dare you.”
While Morgan accused Gottlieb of exploiting the anniversary, the Second Amendment enthusiast shot back, claiming that it is the CNN host who has been politicizing the massacre.
“How many times this year have you attacked gun rights on your show? Sixty? Seventy? Eighty times?” Gottlieb said. “I bet you use Dec. 14 to push your anti-gun agenda.”
Morgan admitted that he will use that day to support and promote gun safety, but the gun rights activist wasn’t happy with that response. Gottlieb charged that Morgan’s definition of gun safety involves banning and confiscating firearms.
With the two talking and yelling over one another, the CNN host went for the jugular.
“Do you know the reason why so many people get killed by guns in America?” Morgan rhetorically asked. “Because idiots like you — and I use that word very deliberately — think it’s funny to laugh in the middle of me reading out a statement from the victims families of Sandy Hook.”
The host went on to dismiss statistics the guest brought that corroborate the idea that guns are actually used quite frequently for citizens’ self-protection. Morgan also said that fewer firearms would be good for America.
“I kind of think we have too many guns in this country,” he said.
