A brave Marine veteran took quick action to try and catch a woman who jumped off of the third deck of the Oakland Coliseum on Sunday.
The woman, who would have died instantly if the courageous man didn’t break her fall, is in very critical condition; the man, who also sustained serious injuries, is in stable condition.
The bizarre incident unfolded in Oakland, Calif., about 15 minutes after last night’s game between the Oakland Raiders and Tennessee Titans concluded, The Daily Mail reported.
The unnamed woman, who Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said appears to be in her mid 20s, reportedly intentionally threw herself off of a section of the third deck that was closed at the time.
“I yelled at her, ‘Don’t do it, please don’t do it’ about 10 times — and she crawled off the edge and jumped,” Ron Brown, a witness, told KTVU-TV.
Rather than allow her to hit the pavement, the unnamed 61-year-old veteran successfully attempted to break her fall. The woman landed on him, leaving both individuals with serious injuries.
“Oh she dropped so fast I could hardly believe it,” Woody Chamble, another witness, told KGO-TV. “Her knees had hit this gentleman in the chest and knocked him to the concrete and she kind of bounced off and hit the side of her head on the concrete.”
The unidentified man, who was reportedly conscious on his way to the hospital, told authorities that he didn’t have much time to think and that he acted quickly to try and save the woman’s life.
Alameda County Sheriff’s Sgt. J.D. Nelson told KGO-TV that the woman would have died without the man’s intervention but that “he saved her life…at his own expense.”
“He put himself in a lot of risk. And, right now, he is in the hospital paying the price for it,” Nelson told CNN.
As of Monday morning, the woman was in intensive care.
