A couple in Hermitage, Tenn., ordered and paid for what they though was breakfast from a local McDonald’s. Instead, they drove away with thousands of dollars in cash.
“My husband opened the bag and discovered the money inside,” Stacye Terry told WTVF-TV. “He said, ‘You are not going to believe this.’ Sure enough, it was their bank deposit money.”
Indeed, the cash belonged to the restaurant and was supposed to be deposited at the bank. For some reason, the money had been placed in a McDonald’s bag and placed near the drive thru orders.
“This will never, ever happen again in our lifetime,” Greg Terry joked.
The couple reportedly never considered keeping the money for themselves. A McDonald’s employee quickly realized the mistake and made contact with the couple at their home just a few minutes away from the restaurant.
“The second that he said it was their deposit, my first thing was let’s get in the truck and take it back. There is no other way to have it. I couldn’t live with myself,” the wife said.
In response to the incident, the owner and operator of the McDonald’s location, Phil Gray, released the following statement:
“We are grateful for this customer and the action they took upon realizing our error. We are looking in to why this mistake happened, but what is most important to us is knowing that we are part a community with the values that were evidenced by this person’s actions.”
