A Texas mother was arrested Tuesday on felony charges after police found her passed out in her car with the windows down and her 4-year-old daughter shivering in the back seat.

According to The Kingwood Observer, authorities found 29-year-old Sarah Bledsoe passed out in her car on Dec. 6 at 12:30 a.m. Next to her in the front seat was an empty bottle of Soma, which Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Lt. David Escobar said is a muscle relaxer.

“Upon further inspection, the deputy noted that there was a child seat in the back and then discovered the four-year old female child in back, shaking and shivering from the cold. The child was only wearing a thin long sleeve T-shirt and pants that were wet,” Escobar said.

The police who came upon the situation found the car cold to the touch, leading them to believe it had been there for some time in park, the Observer reported. According to KHOU-TV, the temperature was in the mid-30s that night.

The child and mother were transported to the hospital. Bledsoe wasn’t released from the hospital until Dec. 10, due to the “amount of drugs that were in her system,” Escobar said. The child was released by protective services into the custody of a family member.

“We are fortunate that this didn’t end with a death because of how long they were in the car with the windows down in the cold temperatures,” Escobar said. “She not only endangered herself because of the narcotics but also endangered the child. We are grateful the deputy was diligent in their patrol to check the car and find the pair.”

According to the report, deputies intended to arrest the mother upon her release from the hospital, but when they arrived, she was gone. Bledsoe was found trying to check into Cypress Creek Hospital.

With felony charges of child endangerment, Bledsoe could face up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
