Iranian negotiators halted nuclear talks with Western powers Friday, further complicating an already controversial interim deal struck last month in Geneva.

The development comes one day after the United States announced it would impose new sanctions on Iran. Iran had said new sanctions would nullify the Geneva agreement.

“The Iranian negotiators interrupted the talks with the [P5+1] for consultations in Tehran,” Iran’s state-run Fars News Agency reported, citing an official familiar with the situation.

The White House plans to address the halt on Friday, the Washington Free Beacon reported.

A European Union representative said they expect the talks to resume soon, according to Agence France-Presse.

But Iran said the new sanctions violate the spirit of the original agreement.

“America’s move is against the spirit of the Geneva deal,” Iranian chief negotiator Abbas Araqchi reportedly told the Iranian press. “We are evaluating the situation and will make the appropriate response.”
