Something mysterious is killing bald eagles in Utah and experts are perplexed as to what it might be.

This month, at least 12 of the majestic birds have died, according to KSL-TV.

“It’s frustrating and heart breaking,” Leslie McFarlane, Division of Wildlife Resources wildlife disease coordinator, said. “It’s really hard because you want to be able to do something right now and we just can’t.”

Experts say the birds show multiple signs of illness before passing.

“They were showing signs of body tremors, they would have seizures, they appeared to be paralyzed and they had weakness in their feet and in their legs,” DaLyn Erickson-Marthaler, who works at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Utah, told KSL-TV.

“It’s hard to watch. It’s really frustrating to not be able to know what we’re treating, what we’re seeing, if we can even treat it at all,” she added.

Experts say because the birds are dying in multiple locations throughout the state, it is unlikely they have been poisoned by anything.

“Usually if you have something, say like a poisoning or something like that, usually you find them in small geographical areas or something along those lines,” McFarlane said.

She aded that Utah has “never had this many birds come in of one species and as quickly in as short of time, and having them all die.”
