Consider this one of the weirdest ways we’ve ever seen any game — not just a hockey game — end.
With the score between the Phoenix Coyotes and the Buffalo Sabres tied 1-1 in overtime Tuesday, goalie Mike Smith blocked a shot from the Sabres’ Mark Pysyk that rebounded into the air. That’s when a fellow Coyote tried to knock it away, only to have the puck take a very unfortunate detour — right into Smith’s pants.
As Smith and his teammates looked for the puck, Smith backed up into his own net. Unfortunately for him, that meant a goal for the Sabres:
As the referees huddled to figure out what happened, one of Smith’s teammates tried to slyly fish the puck out of the back of Smith’s pants and throw it on the ice. It didn’t work:
Pysyk was credited with the goal and that ended the game.
The Associated Press nabbed a great shot of the puck as it was stuck in Smith’s pants:
