The incident occurred on Friday and was reported Tuesday by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. According to Jewish law, pigs are not kosher for consumption.

Jewish community spokesmen told the news service that they also found graffiti in English written on the synagogue’s outside wall which read “Happy Tu B’Shvat, Jewish Pigs.”

Tu B’Shvat, a kind of Jewish arbor day celebrating the environment and the blessing of trees, is next month.

Rabbi Shneor Segal, the top rabbinical official in Baku, Azerbaijan who used to work in Krasnodar told JTA that the local community has contacted police and hopes the perpetrators will be identified and charged.

This incident is similar to one last month in which a pig’s head was left on the doorstep of a synagogue under construction in Sevastopol, Ukraine.
