In order to save his daughter’s life, an Illinois man had to lose a bunch of weight — which turned out to be more than enough motivation for the dad.

Eduardo Camargo’s daughter, Jazlyn, was diagnosed with billary atresia — a condition that occurs when the liver’s bile duct is blocked or absent — shortly after she was born in April 2012. The little girl underwent two surgeries to prevent liver failure, but her condition continued to worsen.

At the age of just 5 months, Jazlyn needed a liver transplant in order to survive.

Camargo said he immediately knew he needed to be the donor.

“Right away I said it had to be me and not my wife,” the father told ABC News. “I have two other daughters and they need a mother more than they need a father.”

However, doctors told Camargo that he couldn’t give his liver to his daughter unless he dropped some weight and got healthier. The 35-year-old father was diagnosed with fatty liver disease, a common condition in overweight or obese people.

Dr. Talia Baker, a liver transplant specialist at North Western Memorial Hospital, told ABC News that they “use no more than 10 percent fat tissue in the liver as our cutoff for donors and unfortunately the father was certainly higher than that.”

Camargo admitted that the weight loss was tough, but he knew he was fighting to save his little girl. So when he felt like his knees were going to give out, he just thought of Jazlyn.

In less than two months, the dad reportedly dropped down to 180 pounds, a 40 pound loss, and lowered the percentage of fat in his liver to below two percent.

And he quickly realized how vital his weight loss would be. Just days before Jazlyn’s scheduled surgery, her liver began to fail as it became obvious she would die without an immediate procedure.

There was a happy ending: “Both surgeries were a resounding success, Baker said. Not only was Jazlyn saved, she expects her father will suffer no ill effects,” the report adds.
