A Colorado man made his 680th blood donation on Thursday and was formally recognized as the Bonfils Blood Center’s highest-volume donor with a certificate of appreciation.

According to KCNC-TV, Bill Cell, 85, has donated 85 gallons of blood in his life in what started as a family tradition.

“My wife thinks it’s great. I actually got one son … to decide to start donating blood,” Cell said.

The 85-year-old started donated blood in 1946 and vows to continue doing so as long as possible, KCNC-TV reported.

“They’ll tell me what my blood went for, like a cancer patient or an accident victim,” Cell told the Denver Post. “I have met a couple of people who needed it.”

He’ll be back in two weeks, the Denver Post added.
