‘Linsanity’: Famed Christian NBA Player’s Story ‘Transcends Sports, Race and Culture’

NBA star Jeremy Lin captured the nation’s attention in 2012 when a string of successful wins on the court sparked massive media coverage — a phenomenon that came to be known as “Linsanity.”

A documentary about the player’s life — also called “Linsanity” — was released on DVD Tuesday, offering a fascinating lens into Lin’s personal and professional journeys.

“Linsanity follows an undersized California kid — a child of Taiwanese immigrants — who loved hoops fiercely and refused to give up,” reads a press release announcing the film’s DVD release. “It also shows the faith and family that sustained and guided a young Asian-American through physical and societal obstacles and past heartbreaking setbacks.”

TheBlaze interviewed “Linsanity” director Evan Jackson Leong to learn more about the film and his experience telling the NBA star’s very personal story.

What was your motivation for making the film?

I was initially drawn to Jeremy’s story because of who he was and what he represented. On the court he was an amazing basketball player who could inspire a whole new generation of Asian Americans. Off the court he had the principles of a role model that could inspire everyone.

You started filming before Jeremy’s fame hit a fever pitch. How did that process change once Linsanity became a mainstream media theme?

Basically, we didn’t have an ending. In February 2012, Jeremy gave us an ending. Not only did he change his life, he changed our life. We had a huge responsibility to tell the story of this amazing miracle.

What can viewers expect from the film?

There are a lot of different elements for a lot of different audiences, but at the end of the day, this is a universal story that transcends sports, race, and culture. This a story about chasing your dreams.

What most surprised you about Jeremy’s character?

I think what surprised me most is his discipline and his humor. He is disciplined both in his work ethic and equally with his faith.

Just how important is faith in the basketball player’s everyday life?

I can only speak from my own perspective, but faith is important in everyone’s everyday life. Without it, what are we doing?

What’s something fun or interesting that you can tell us about Jeremy that we might not already know?

He loves playing video games. When I asked him if he could only play one thing the rest of his life, basketball or Dota 2, he paused…

How are you feeling about the film’s success?

We never set out to make money for this project. We always wanted to get this seen by the most people in the world and make an impact. I’m happy with the outcome and hope we can do even better. Jeremy’s story is one that everyone can relate to and hopefully be inspired by.
