Individuals walking the shores of Lake Michigan will probably notice something very unusual in the waters — giant ice balls.
In the wake of the “Polar Vortex,” the balls formed “when water from the lake begins to freeze and is pushed ashore by wave motions,” according to AccuWeather.com meteorologist Jim Andrews.
“It’s possible that the ice is accreting like a snowball or like a hailstone, and that they keep growing,” he said.
Video capturing the phenomenon has now gone viral, achieving nearly 170,000 views at the time of publication.
