A Portland, Ore., woman lost an envelope containing thousands of dollars last week and was lucky enough to have it returned by an extremely good Samaritan.

Sharon Davis, 71, made a quick stop at a Safeway grocery store while on her way to put down a payment on a new home (that’s what the envelope, which contained $2,000 in cash, a $38,000 cashier’s check and paperwork for the new home, was for).

But somewhere between buying a cup of coffee and walking back to her car, Davis managed somehow to lose the envelope.

She didn’t realize until she reached her car that it was missing. Frantic, Davis started retracing her steps and asking the nearby shops if anyone had turned in her lost envelope.

Luckily, a man named Brian DiCarlo found the envelope and made the decision to turn it over to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.

“My first thought is that this person, whoever it is, is a wreck, and they are probably losing their mind trying to retrace their steps,” DiCarlo told KCTV5.

DiCarlo called the non-emergency Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office phone number and told them about the envelope, eventually turning it over to the authorities.

“As it turned out, she was putting a down payment down on a house, and this was all for that stuff,” said DiCarlo.

“If she loses it she can’t do what she was hoping to do, and I guess I would have hoped someone would have done it for me,” he said.

Using the paperwork left inside the envelope, authorities were able to track down Davis (who was still in the process of searching the parking lot for her missing envelope).

“What a good and amazing man,” Davis said, referring to DiCarlo.

She later called the man and “profusely” thanked him, KCTV5 reported.

“I’m just glad I was in the right place at the right time,” said DiCarlo.
