If your head is inside a grizzly bear’s mouth, a row of long, sharp teeth is likely the last thing you’ll ever see. That is unless you’re Doug Seus, a renowned bear trainer.
In this case, the bear trainer lives to see another day and the bear gets words of affirmation — a “good boy.”
Though Seus wouldn’t necessarily consider what he does with his three bears tricks — he told Barcoft TV it’s more “getting into the heart and soul of the bear” — Seus is able to interact with the thousand-pound animals in ways that would terrify many.
Seus demonstrated how he let’s one of his bears, Bart 2, put his entire mouth over the trainer’s head. At one point, Bart 2 rolled over and gave a high-five, similar to how a trained dog would.
“My passion for bears started in hiking and being out in the wild with them,” the 71-year-old trainer said in the Barcroft TV feature.
Even when the bear started to exert its strength to much, say putting its clawed paw a little too heavily on Seus’ back, a quick word of admonition had the animal backing off.
“Bart, off.” That’s all it took for Seus to say and the animal was letting him go.
Seus’ bears, which are trained in Utah where he lives with his wife, have worked in films with celebrities like Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman and also recently appeared in the HBO series “Game of Thrones.”

Due to their close relationship with bears and unique understanding of the creatures, Seus and his wife started the Vital Ground foundation to help protect wild bears and their habitats.
