Isaac Lufkin has inspired the country since rocketing to the national spotlight last week, telling the nation that despite the fact that he was born without arms, he still wants to be a professional football player in the NFL.
Lufkin’s story made such an impact that he was even invited to the Super Bowl over the weekend as a guest of honor, and got to meet former President Bill Clinton and Hollywood starlet Jennifer Garner.
The 14-year-old appeared on the Glenn Beck Program Monday, joking that the only time he ever gets discouraged about his condition, thinking “I can’t do this” or “I don’t want to do this,” is when it comes to chores.
“I want to be inspiring to people like me that have disabilities, that think they can’t,” he added on a more serious note. “Because if I can, they can. And those who think that they can’t, and they’re fully-abled … they just decide that they’re too lazy to do things.”
But it is one quote that Lufkin’s mother, Lori, “instilled” in him from an early age that summarizes the young man’s mentality the most: “I can’t means I won’t.”
And the 14-year-old has lived by that line, showing Beck how he has learned do everything from opening a can of soda to chatting with his friends on the computer. Many others would’ve required assistance their whole lives, but Lufkin won’t even let anyone carry his backpack.
“I don’t like pity. Pity just makes me weaker,” he said.
Lufkin currently spends much of his time playing football. His high school team in Rhode Island was undefeated and won the state title last season.
Beck praised Lufkin’s mother for raising such a wonderful young man, and teaching him that “you just gotta do it.”
