Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) said there is a “pattern of lawlessness” underway by the Obama administration that is truly “breathtaking,” and it should not only concern Republicans.

“Suppose the next president says, ‘I’m instructing the Treasury Department [to] no longer collect taxes at a higher rate than 25%,” Cruz remarked on Glenn Beck’s radio program Tuesday. “That happens to be policy I agree with. I would love to see moving towards tax reform and lowering the top rates. And yet, that would be an extraordinarily bad outcome from the perspective of the Constitution and the protection of the liberty of the people.”

Cruz warned: “For all of those on the left who are willing to excuse the president’s lawlessness and disregarding federal law, there will come another president… of the other party.”

The Texas senator referenced the string of unilateral changes made to Obamacare alone, and added: “If a president can pick and choose which laws to follow, he’s no longer a president.”

Cruz serves as the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights, and recently released the third in a series of reports on instances where the administration has “advocated consistently for over-broad federal power.” This report, in particular, focuses on ten separate cases relating to federal encroachment upon the state of Texas.

And even Beck was unaware of the extent of Cruz’ history of standing by the Constitution and principles over party.

He was shocked when Cruz remarked: “I have been very vocal and… represented the state of Texas before the U.S. Supreme Court against president George W. Bush when he exceeded his authority in trying to order the state courts to obey the world court.”

After Beck congratulated him for taking the stand, Cruz said simply: “Well, it’s just standing up for the Constitution and the principles we believe, and it ought to be commonplace. It ought to be what everyone’s doing. There should be 435 members of the House and 100 senators all standing together.”

Cruz encouraged Americans to visit the website makedclisten.org, calling it an opportunity for Americans to indicate “which challenge facing the country you think is the highest priority.”

“The answer’s not going to come from Washington,” Cruz concluded. “It will come from empowering the American people … That’s the way to turn it around: speak out and demand accountability.”
