By some projections, during the Sochi Winter Olympics, Coca-Cola could spend over $100 million dollars to promote its soft drinks on NBC and its affiliated networks. Last summer, Ad Age magazine projected the Atlanta-based beverage company to be right near the top of companies buying as much as $800 million in commercial time on television.
That fact might be causing problems at MSNBC after Mika Brzezinski, co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, lit into Coke during a particularly animated rant on Thursday morning’s program.
During what appears to be an unscripted exchange, Brzezinski announced that she had a problem with Coca-Cola (and all soda makers), “Nobody should buy Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Orange Soda, Grape Crush…whatever.” As Scarborough sat silent, and looking slightly stunned, Mika continued, “That stuff doesn’t need to be in stores.” Adding, “Get rid of it, and the world would be a better place.”
Joe Scarborough attempted to take some of the sting out of his partner’s rant by asking, “Why don’t you just tell Americans to turn their back on Jesus at the same time?”
Mika wasn’t taking the hint, finishing the attack on soda by declaring, “We don’t need it. It is liquid poison.”

It is no secret that Brzezinski is the show’s anti-sugar czar. She is frequently preaching about the dangers of sugar, fat, and salt to her co-host, panelists and viewers. In fact, just two days earlier, the same show did an extended segment, lead by Mika, spotlighting a new CDC report tying sugar intake to heart disease.
Perhaps the strangest part of this story happened a few minutes before Mika’s attack on the soda industry.
As the show opened, Brzezinski announced that her daughter had baked something called “slutty brownies” and offered them to the panelists. In case you are not familiar with the “slutty brownie” concept (we were not), it is a decadent combination of a blondie with an Oreo “double-stuff” cookie inside, covered with chocolate. Not exactly the healthy choice option on any breakfast menu.

TheBlaze contacted both Coca-Cola and MSNBC for comments on the segment and Brzezinski’s savaging of the sodas. At press time, MSNBC had not responded to repeated calls and emails.
However, Coca-Cola did. A representative from the corporate office of Coke simply said, “We have nothing to respond with regarding your questions…Thanks very much.”
