Mike Rowe is a man of many talents. The former “Dirty Jobs” personality has appeared in commercials for companies from Ford to Walmart, and recently published a book encouraging “hard work, skilled labor, risk [and] entrepreneurship.”
On the Glenn Beck Program Wednesday, Beck bet that Rowe could read a brief statement describing the sport of curling — not one of the more exciting athletic feats, by many accounts — and still make it captivating.
Rowe took him up on the challenge.
Poised in front of a music stand, with a curling clip in the background and dramatic music playing, Rowe said in a deep, passionate voice: “To the untrained eye, they’re just rocks and a sheet of ice. To you, it’s chess with a broom, requiring delicate precision and unflinching steadiness. Slide your stones carefully, as the globe holds its collective breath. You are an Olympic curler, and you have swept the world off its feet. Curl on Olympians, curl on.”
As Beck laughed helplessly, Rowe told the audience with false modesty: “Please. Thank you. Take your seats, everyone…”
Rowe said at the beginning of the show that “it’s a very, very strange time to be on TV,” and little illustrates it better than the inspirational curling clip.
“This is nonfiction in the age of Honey Boo Boo,” he said. “The ducks have a dynasty and the Amish have a mafia.”
