German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were captured Tuesday in a very unfortunate pose.

The frozen-in-time image of Netanyahu’s finger casting a Hitler mustache-like shadow over Merkel’s face is so unfortunate that all of Israel is apparently “talking about [it] right now,” according to i24 News’ Julien Bahloul.

The snap comes by way of Jerusalem Post photographer Marc Israel Sellem during Merkel’s visit to Israel. He posted it on Facebook and afterward it went “wildly viral,” according to Harretz editor Chemi Shalev.

Merkel is in Israel with most of her cabinet to show Germany’s support for Israel’s security and future.

“We have come here with almost the whole of our new government and we wanted to show you in this way that this is indeed a very strong friendship,” Merkel said Tuesday at a press conference with Netanyahu.

She said her country has been working with Israel “shoulder to shoulder” over the past 50 years “to secure the future of the state of Israel.”

She added: “Part and parcel of the security of Israel is the two-state solution … a Jewish state of Israel and alongside it a Palestinian state.”
