While whale watchers might welcome a close look at the marine mammals, one woman’s encounter got more physical than she probably ever expected.

That woman was Chelsea Crawford, who was “slapped in the face” by the whale’s tail as she sat on the bow of a boat off the coast of Baja California, Mexico.

“We went whale watching on the Baja this weekend, and unfortunately, Chelsea got smacked in the head by a whale’s tail,” Crawford’s friend Jordyn Rivet wrote on YouTube. “Luckily, she was fine and we got it on video!”

Watch the footage uploaded to the video-sharing site Sunday:

According to MSN New Zealand, the women were whale watching while on a trip with the Canadian charity LiveDifferent.
