A Tennessee woman allegedly crashed a car into a church and stabbed her husband in the chest before police apprehended her Sunday night.
Stephanie Hamman, 23, reportedly drove her vehicle through the front doors of Providence Church and after her husband Steven Hamman went to the church to check on her, she attacked him.
Hamman said he found his wife laying in front of the church altar before she told him “the devil is in me” and stabbed him in the chest with a large kitchen knife, WFSA-TV reported.
When police found Stephanie Hamman 20 minutes later at a local hospital, she reportedly told them that she was mad at her husband for “worshiping the NASCAR race at Bristol,” though it is unclear if this was the reason behind her alleged actions.
Stephanie Hamman reportedly told police said she smokes a lot of marijuana and that God told her to enter the church. She also indicated that she believed the devil put thoughts in her head, according to the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.
“So God told me He wanted me in there, so I drove my car through the front doors,” read a press release from the Church Hill Police Department.
As for the stabbing, she reportedly told police that the devil told her to bring the knife with her to the church, according to WFSA-TV.
“I laid down in front of the altar until he got there,” she said. “I prayed I would not have to use it on him, but I did.”
Hamman, who is being held without bond, was charged with attempted first-degree murder and felony vandalism. She will appear in court Wednesday.
Steven Hamman survived the stabbing and was in fair condition as of Monday afternoon.
