Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Iowa State Patrol were attending to a cash scene Friday, but, as it would turn out, they themselves were lucky to walk away with their lives after a truck launched into the air and narrowly missed hitting them.

The stunning moment when the pick-up truck flew between two cruisers before landing on a grassy hill nearby was caught on a dashboard camera.

According to KWWL-TV, deputies and troopers were talking near another cruiser with its lights flashing when semitruck driver Michael Smith was distracted by the crash. Smith failed to slow dow, according to deputies, and ended up rear-ending Dana Miller, who was driving the soon-to-be airborne Ford pick-up truck. As a result, the small truck was sent flying through the scene.

Trooper Jesse Hernandez was sitting in a cruiser in the camera’s field of view when it was clipped by the truck. Afterward, the officers outside the car checked on Hernandez and later attended to Miller.

Here’s an interior video of the accident while Hernandez was still in his car:

“This is just a glaring example of how close we came to losing Trooper Hernandez, Deputy [Aaron] Hammes, along with Reserve Deputy [Kim] Pearson … all because a driver of a semi chose not to slow down when approaching a crash scene full of vehicles and emergency lights,” Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek told KWWL.

KCRG-TV reported that Hernandez had some back pain but his injuries due to the crash were not serious.

“In these types of situations what I need people to do, more than ever, is just to pay attention to the road and pay attention straight ahead,” Bob Conrad with Iowa State Patrol said, according to the news station.

Iowa law requires drivers to move over a lane, if possible, or slow down when cars are pulled off to the side.
