Music artist Nick Cannon ignited an Internet firestorm Monday after he posted several images online showing him wearing whiteface.

The photos, seemingly an attempt to promote his new album, “White People Party Music,” hitting stores April 1, shows Cannon donning a new wardrobe with blonde hair. Video shows him speaking in an accent.

After posting the photos, many criticized the rapper over the move, calling it “racist” and “hypocritical.”

Honest truth! If a white person paints their face brown, they're called racist...sooooo why is this ok?? http://t.co/FUSee55E2s

I can't stand @ - he's been musically irrelevant his entire career. Now, he tries to use racist controversy to sell albums.

It's fine for Nick Cannon to dress up as "whiteface" but when Julianne Hough dresses as a "blackface" character off a TV show it's racist?

Canon fired back on Twitter:

It's funny how people take themselves so seriously. People love drama! We feed off of it. Just relax and have fun!!
