Caught on Video: The Mere Presence of This ‘Blonde Woman’ at Cairo University Sparks a Sickening Incident

Cairo University students reportedly verbally attacked and attempted to tear a “blonde woman’s” clothes off as she strolled across the campus. In a video uploaded on YouTube, men can be seen acting like animals, whistling and jeering as the woman hurried on her way.

As BuzzFeed later noted, the woman actually appears to be wearing a yellow hijab or headscarf.

The woman, who has not been identified, was wearing a long-sleeved pink top and black jeans. Some of the men involved in the incident were reportedly law students. Luckily, it appears that no physical harm came to the woman.

Gaber Nassar, the dean of Cairo University, told Egyptian channel ONTV that the woman’s clothes helped cause the incident, sparking additional outrage.

“This girl entered the university wearing an abaya (loose cloak) and then took it off in the faculty, and appeared with those clothes, that caused, in reality… the incident,” he is quoted as saying. “The student’s mistake does not justify what the (other) students did.”

Nassar later took to Twitter to defend himself from intense criticism, saying he was misunderstood and vowing to make sure the students responsible for harassing the woman are “severely punished.”

As the Daily Mail reports, most of Cairo University’s female students “wear jeans and tops and avoid revealing clothes, and many wear the traditional Islamic headscarves, as do the majority of Egypt’s women.”

According to a 2013 UN Women study, more than 99 percent of women in Egypt have been victims of some type of harassment.

This story has been updated to reflect the fact that woman in the video appears to be wearing a yellow hijab or headscarf.
