Justina Pelletier was 14-years-old when her parents took her to Boston Children’s Hospital for complications she had developed from the flu.
Her doctors at Tufts University had diagnosed her with – and were successfully treating her for – mitochondrial disease. But the doctors at Boston Children’s disagreed, saying she had a psychiatric condition. After Justina’s parents, Lou and Linda Pelletier, asked for a second opinion, they were escorted out by security and within days, had lost custody of their daughter to the Department of Children and Families.
The legal battle continues over a year later, with Justina’s health deteriorating by the day. On Tuesday, a Massachusetts judge ruled that Justina will remain in the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families.
Jennifer Pelletier, Justina’s sister, told Buck Sexton on TheBlaze TV Wednesday: “It’s her life, her body. She should be able to be doing what she wishes … Her education has been completely broken … It just goes on and on and on. The level of insanity and — I think it’s criminal the way these people have been treating my sister.”
“I want her back home,” she added.
Lou Pelletier added that during the past year, as Justina’s treatment for mitochondrial disease has been halted, “her health went from being ice skater, going to school, to … [she is now] paralyzed below the legs, almost no physical strength above [the legs]. [Her] hairline is receding, gum line is receding. Mentally, her memory is fading, her ability to speak. All under the care of Boston Children’s Hospital.”
Mat Staver, the founder and chairman of the Liberty Counsel, said “this judge simply rubber stamps” whatever DCF requests.
Staver added that they won’t be wasting time going back to the same judge, who will only kick the issue down the road again. They will be going to a higher court, and are looking at “all avenues” of “liability against all the different actors … for this incredible harm that they’ve inflicted on Justina.”
“It has become the national outrage,” Lou concluded.
