A possible “silver lining” to the story of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is that it has shined a light on our heavily polluted oceans, a CNN host suggested Monday.
“Is there potentially a silver lining in all of this, that there will be a worldwide cause of action to clean up the oceans and for there to be less polluting, greater fines, more regulation?” CNN’s Michael Smerconish asked during a segment on the missing flight.
“I think so. That’s something all of us are hoping for. This is drawing attention to something that is largely an invisible issue for most people,” LiveScience.com editor Marc Lallanilla responded. “In fact, the Indian Ocean garbage patch wasn’t discovered until 2010 by groups going across the ocean to see if there was a garbage patch there. Similar to a fairly well known garbage patch called the ‘Great Pacific’ garbage patch.”
