Mindy Corporan, the mother of a teenage boy and the daughter of a man who were both tragically killed during a shooting at a Jewish community center in Overland Park, Kan., Sunday, told community members that she believes both victims are in heaven together.
Speaking at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church just hours after the horrific event, Corporan, who was remarkably composed, said that she’s in shock over the events that took the lives of her son, Reat Griffin Underwood, and her father, Dr. William Lewis Corporan.
“I’m in shock,” she said from the podium. “But I want you know I appreciate you all being here.”
After explaining her relationship to the victims, gasps and tears could be heard coming from those in attendance.
“We all grieve in different ways and I just wanted to tell people ‘thank you,’” Corporan said. “I want you to know that I came upon the scene very very quickly. I was there before the police and I was there before the ambulance. And I knew immediately that they’re in heaven together.”
Corporan said that her father had taken her son to theater tryouts at the Overland Park Jewish Community Center, as she was busy with another son’s lacrosse activities. Since she and her mother were unable to take Reat to the center, her father volunteered to do so.
“We were having life, and I want you to know, we’re going to have more life,” she said, encouraging those in attendance to “love one another.” “I got to tell them both today that I love them. I was the last person in the family who saw them.”
She said her son loved school and enjoyed singing and acting.
