The man who allegedly carried at least one of two bags left at the finish line of the Boston Marathon Tuesday night is in custody and has been charged after what was apparently a cruel hoax meant to mimic the bombing that occurred a year ago, killing three people and injuring hundreds.

The man identified as Kevin “Kayvon” Edson by sources speaking to WBZ was apparently screaming “Boston strong” — a popular support slogan that emerged after the bombings on April 15, 2013 — and wearing a black veil. The source told the news station that when stopped by police, the suspect said the bag held a rice cooker, which ended up being full of confetti.

A bomb squad was quickly brought in and the unattended bags at the finish line were “disrupted for precautionary reasons.”

The 25-year-old is charged with threatening battery, possession of a hoax explosive device, threats to commit a crime, disturbing the peace, disturbing a public assembly and disorderly conduct, Police Department wrote in a blog post.

MassLive pointed out a couple videos supposedly showing Edson on YouTube.

In this one you can see a man cloaked in black yelling “Boston strong” while running in the middle of the street:

Here’s another angle:

In this video on the channel Natural Selection from 2012, a man identified as Edson from Boston describes himself as a fashion designer, performance artist, college dropout, drag queen, among other titles:

“The street style that I do has some symbolism behind it,” Edson said in the video, adding that he had spent time in jail.

“I really hope that I can just show the world how to dress, one bottle cap, one soda tab, one empty cigarette pack at a time,” he continued, sharing later in the video that he has been diagnosed as bipolar.

A Facebook page that appears to be owned by Edson, earlier on Tuesday uploaded a cover photo of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the two men accused of detonating the bombs last year, saying “had a blast at the marathon” and linking to a page asserting the innocence of Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed in a police confrontation a few days after the Boston attack.

The second bag defused Tuesday night, after the one allegedly carried by Edson, is thought to have contained photography equipment, according to WBZ.

Watch the Boston Herald’s report about the precautionary detonation of the packages that put the area in a shelter-in-place state for a couple hours:

Boston Police Department said in the blog post that while backpacks and strollers will be allowed at next week’s marathon, it noted that they will be subject to search.
