A Michigan mother was in the car Wednesday night when suspects approached and tried to rob her and her boyfriend at gunpoint. When the couple sped away, shots were fired after them.
While probably shaken, the couple made it to their home in Flint unscathed. But when the mother, who was not named by police, took her 19-month-old out of the backseat, she saw something horrific. The toddler had been shot in the leg.
“I don’t know how a young child can get shot and not scream, yell or anything,” Michigan State Police Detective Robert Dunham told MLive. “[The mother] said she never noticed any blood. She said she was moving her into the house, and that’s when she notices she was bleeding.”
The girl was immediately taken to the hospital where she was initially listed in critical condition. After surgery the toddler’s condition was upgraded.
Dunham called the shooting “bizarre,” and said they’ve “got work to do to get to the bottom of this,” MLive reported.
Jamie Northrup, who lives in the neighborhood where the incident occurred, told WEYI-TV that her area is generally “pretty quiet,” which is why what happened earlier this week while she was coloring Easter eggs surprised her.
“To hear about someone just a couple of blocks away with a gun and trying to hijack someone’s car, that’s wow,” Northrup told the news station.
No arrests have been made in the case as of Friday.
