Many who warned that gay marriage would lead to a “slippery slope” on the road to polygamy were seemingly vindicated last week, when three lesbians in Massachusetts declared themselves the world’s first “throuple.”
The word is defined in Urban Dictionary as: “A threelationship; a relationship with three partners.”
According to the New York Daily News, Doll, Kitten and Brynn Young consider themselves married — though their legal status is questionable, since polygamy isn’t legal in the state — and are expecting their first baby in a few months time.
The New York Post adds that Kitten, age 27, is six months pregnant via an anonymous sperm donor.
“Why can’t you recognize polygamy?” Glenn Beck said sarcastically on his radio program Tuesday. “Love is love. Who are you to say what love is? Why do you call it polygamy? That is just an outdated word. It’s a throuple.”
“The word is actually worse than the thing,” Beck’s co-host Stu Burguiere added with disgust. “‘Throuple’ makes me feel worse than the actual union.”
Pat Gray, Beck’s other co-host, added mockingly: “This is a beautiful story. So traditional. The older women, Brynn and Doll, have been together two-and-a-half years. They found Kitten on a threesome web site. How many of you ever been down that road?”
Back in June, Glenn Beck argued that the government has no place in marriage. But he cautioned: “If you change one variable — man and a woman to man and man, and woman and woman, you cannot then tell me that you cannot logically tell me you can’t change the other variable: one man, three women. One woman, four men.”
Beck was mocked by everyone from Buzzfeed to the Huffington Post for suggesting that, after gay marriage became acceptable, polygamy could be next. Now, Beck said, it seems as though the language is simply being changed.
“I have to put this in my diary, because I want to make sure we are up-to-date on all of the words,” Beck said Monday. “I took ‘throuple,’ and I immediately replaced polygamy, because three people married to each other — the cavemen used to call that polygamy.”
