In one of the more unhinged television studio brawls – even by the standards of Jordan, which has had its share of wild television moments – political commentators trashed a TV studio earlier this week in the heat of a debate over the war in Syria.

The apparently unscripted moment began when two political analysts hurled insults at each other, with one calling his colleague a “deviant” and comparing him to a prostitute.

An excerpt from the televised debate was translated to English and posted online by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

MEMRI identified the analysts as Shaker Al-Jawhari and Muhammad Al-Jayousi, the latter a correspondent for the Syrian News Agency and a supporter of the Assad regime.

Al-Jayousi said he is “proud” of reporting for the official government news outlet and told his interlocutor, “You yourself used to publish my articles, before you deviated from the path.”

That comment seemed to provoke Al-Jawhari who zinged the Assad supporter, telling him, “As long as we’re talking about deviation, a deviant is someone who supports the slaughtering of people.”

“No, you are the deviant,” Al-Jayousi answered.

To which Al-Jawhari countered: “A deviant is someone who jumps from one lap to another, depending on who pays more.”

After getting into an exchange of “shut up’s,” the men rose from their seats and began pulling apart the desk. Literally. While breaking apart the wooden studio desk, one of the political analysts managed to get in a kick at the other who himself was struggling with the desktop.

By the time they were done – ignoring the pleas of the host and studio staff -  they’d broken the desk into pieces.
